Types of Calcium
Below are some common forms of calcium available today and how they compare for absorbability. Please consult your physician if you have questions.
Calcium Carbonate
One form of calcium carbonate is Oyster Shell supplements. Calcium Carbonate from Oyster Shell is 40% calcium. Only 10% of the calcium is absorbed from the carbonate. So for every 1,000 mg calcium carbonate 40% or 400 mg is calcium. Of this 400 mg 10% is absorbed, or only 40 mg of useable calcium.
Tribasic Calcium Phosphate
Calcium phosphate is 39% calcium. Only 10% of the calcium is absorbed from the phosphate. So for every 1,000 mg calcium phosphate 39% or 390 mg is calcium. Of this 390 mg 10% is absorbed, or only 39 mg of useable calcium.
Calcium Lactate
Found in dairy products. Calcium lactate is 37% calcium. Only 33% of the calcium is absorbed from the lactate. So for every 1,000 mg of calcium lactate 37% or 370 mg is calcium. Of this 370 mg 33% is absorbed, or only 122 mg of useable calcium.
Calcium Citrate
Calcium citrate is 21% calcium. Only 50% of the calcium is absorbed from the citrate. So for every 1,000 mg calcium citrate 21% or 210 mg is calcium. Of this 210 mg 50% is absorbed, or only 105 mg of useable calcium.
Coral Calcium
Ionic Coral Calcium is 24% calcium. 95% is absorbed from the coral. So for every 1,000 mg coralcalcium 24% or 240 mg is calcium. Of this 240 mg 95% is absorbed, or 228 mg of useable calcium.
